Shark Week Watchlist: Streaming Guide

Bait 3D (2012)

Bait is so much fun, this creature feature thriller is a must watch for Shark Week! Set in a flooded grocery store after a natural disaster off the coast of Australia. A group of mismatched adults starring Sharni Vinson (You’re Next), Xavier Samuel and Julian McMahon try to find a way out when killer sharks start attacking them. There are a few silly little backstories, a cop father and an angsty daughter and an ex-couple but other than that it is a group of strangers. The flooding scene in the beginning is really exciting and kind of reminds us of Day After Tomorrow, which we love. It is pretty fast paced once the sharks start to attack and the movie flows well. The shark effects are cool and pretty practical, 3 animatronic sharks were used during filming and they feel pretty realistic. Check it out for a fun and fast one!

Jaws (1975)

Jaws is obviously a classic that is pretty much a summer must watch. Starring Robert Shaw this one will always hold up! Over 67 million people in the U.S. went to see Jaws when it was originally released in 1975, making it the first summer "blockbuster." So if you haven’t decided if you should watch it yet, stop reading and just go watch it. Easily the “Best” Movie on the list if you’re looking for a more serious shark movie.

Sharknado (2012)

Sharknado is the perfect example of a good “bad movie”. It is very low budget, shot in 18 days and it shows. It was made for TV and has a very questionable plot and the actors clearly took their roles about as seriously as the writers did but somehow despite all this it hits every time. It is just a blast to watch if you’re in good spirits and not taking it too seriously. The dialogue and interactions between characters are pretty awkward but if you enjoy hilariously bad horror movies this is a must watch, if not maybe skip this one. But I mean killer sharks raining from the sky? For us this is a yes, please!

Deep Blue Sea (1999)

Deep Blue Sea is our favorite shark movie, with the perfect doses of nostalgia, humor, recognizable faces and great effects it’s nearly perfect for us. Starring Thomas Jane, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgård and LL Cool J the cast is a huge selling point, it’s simply just a good time. They do a great job of making the storyline at least plausible and so much fun. The animatronics in the movie give it such a real feel and add to the credibility as a great movie. The remote controlled sharks weighed about 4 tons each, and swam on their own, up to thirty miles per hour! There was also a real shark used in a few scenes. The shark vibes are strong throughout and this one is perfect if you’re in that mood. Also fun fact, the license plate pulled from the shark's teeth is the same as the plate found in Jaws (1975).

Under Paris (2024)

Under Paris is probably our least favorite on the list but it was fun enough and had a really interesting setting in Paris. We didn’t really really like anybody but they felt like realistic characters nonetheless. It is essentially about a scientist figuring out how to stop a giant shark with a taste for humans that appears in the Seine, (this is basically a huge river that runs straight through Paris) despite her tragic and obviously shark related past. The main story is a little sappier than we’d like and we could’ve seen more sharks throughout to be honest. There were a few bloody attack scenes that made it an enjoyable experience overall and a good fit for Shark Week. We didn’t like the ending but overall it was worth a watch.

47 Meters Down

47 meters down is very intense and enthralling once it gets going. The story follows two sisters (Mandy Moore and Claire Holt) on a trip in Mexico. They are kind of annoying in the beginning but most characters in these types of situations are. They decide to go cage diving to sight see sharks “safely”. One of them is very adventures and the other is just trying to “not be boring” and gets pressured into it. Of course they do end up seeing some sharks and a lot more up close then they had planned! There are some issues with the cord when they try to get pulled back up by the crew that brought them out and they end up stuck underwater with limited air supply and some new hungry friends. This one is fun and fast paced with an ending we liked. A solid choice if you’re looking for shark vibes that are simple and entertaining.
