Movie Nights: Week in review 5.30-6.06

This week we were all over the place, just vibin’.

Bad Samaritan (2018)

Bad Samaritan is a fast paced cat and mouse horror thriller that is most definitely worth watching.  It is very well acted with David Tennant as Cale Erendreich, a rich playboy with a sick secret and some bad habits. We love Tennant, he is incredibly talented and gives a fantastic villain performance (as he usually does), he captures an evil essence and brings more depth to the character and the movie. Our hero is a young thief just trying to do the right thing, played by Robert Sheehan who also gives a fantastic performance. The characters seem well developed and realistic. There are some really creepy scenes, a horrific premise overall and a great build up of tension. We also love the ending which is always a plus. This film has an anxious crime thriller vibe throughout and we dig it, it would be a great choice for something that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Vacancy (2007)

Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale star in this enthralling and gritty suspense flick with great build up and some really fun shots. Vacancy really gives a “The Strangers” vibe, it is about an unhappy couple in a secluded location being terrorized by a group of masked killers. Their car breaks down on the way home and they end up having to check into a run down motel off the interstate. Shortly afterwards David (Wilson) finds some snuff films that appear to be shot from inside their room, he searches and finds hidden cameras. The killers begins to terrorize them and it is a bloody good time! We love to watch killers have fun with it and these guys definitely deliver. We don’t love the ending but overall its a fun way to spend an hour and a half.

Good Boy (2022)

Good Boy isn’t gory but it is incredibly creepy, and has such a fun premise. Katrine Lovise Øpstad Fredriksen plays a young woman Sigrid, looking for love on a dating app when she meets a handsome and very wealthy man she thinks is a catch. (Gard Løkke) It turns out he was a roommate that dresses and acts like a dog, all the time. When they meet he tells her that she must also treat him like a dog. Despite this glaring red flag she decides to engage in a relationship with this man and as it progresses she runs into some obvious danger. This movie has authentic feeling characters played very well. Gard Løkke’s character makes us think of Finn Wittrock in American Horror Story: Freak Show, he gives a great performance. The movie is pretty predictable but it is a really fun ride. The music in it was perfect throughout and really helped set the scene. It could have been more disturbing at the end. It felt pretty tame but we really enjoyed the psychological horror aspects so it was still worth it!

MEN (2022)

This is one of the weirdest movies we have seen in a long time. Alex Garland directs this sci-fi folk horror movie set in the beautiful English countryside. It is a very unique story and pretty creepy in the beginning. As the movie goes on you start to realize all the men she interacts with in this town she is visiting seem to be the same person/entity. It gets progressively weirder, the end is bizarre, we still don’t really know how we feel about it. We were left feeling unsettled and with a lot of questions but we’re glad we saw it. Definitely worth watching if you like Alex Garland or very strange sci-fi films.

Wrong Tun (2003)

Wrong Turn is super nostalgic for us because we used to watch this one over and over. It follows a group of very attractive young people (Jeremy Sisto, Eliza Dushku, Emmanuelle Chriqui and Desmond Harrington) being tracked down and chased through the woods by a hillbilly cannibal family. This one is so much fun and has that classic early 2000’s horror vibe that we love. The tension is great and we really like how gross and creepy the attackers are. A must see for horror lovers!

(Side note fuck the 2021 remake, its trash)

Cherry Tree Lane

Cherry Tree Lane feels like a super low budget version of funny games with worse and less intelligent assailants. This short movie (77 minutes) is worth a watch if you’re looking for something quick, not too deep and fast paced. This movie feels intense but also a little slow at times. It is violent but not graphic but there is an implied rape scene. Overall it is pretty average but works if you’re in that home invasion vibe.
