Movie Nights: Week in review 6.07-6.13 Father’s Day Edition

This week we watched some bad dads to make the perfect Father’s Day Streaming Guide.

Amityville Horror (1979)

This one is pretty classic as far as supernatural thrillers go, it isn’t our absolute favorite but definitely earns its spot up there for Horror Dad watches. James Brolin kills it as a handsome family man and you just wanna root for the guy but he buys the wrong house. There was a massacre in the residence the year before but they decided to pull the trigger anyway. Him and his family end up being haunted by some kind of evil force in the home that is pushing/willing him to kill his family as well. It does hold your attention if you’re really watching it and it has some pretty creepy parts. It definitely lays a great framework for future similarly themed movies, “The Conjuring” and “The Shining” come to mind. The end gets pretty hairy and a little wild with some untied ends but its worth seeing at least once!

The Stepfather (1987)

The Stepfather

This is a perfect Father’s Day Horror/Thriller film, it is just the right amount of violence mixed with a charismatic family man/psycho killer just looking for the perfect family. Jerry O'Quinn is so fantastic in this role he plays this character perfectly, it feels so genuinely insane. The first kill scene is really great, you actually just see him walk past the aftermath of the violent carnage, but still. After killing that first family he moves on and we find our Bad Dad calling himself Jerry Blake, remarried and selling real estate in a new town. This movie has some really great build up because we are also seeing a perspective from a guy trying to track “Jerry” down, so you watch him get closer and closer. We love the ending, it is so much fun with a great chase scene and some good stabs which is always a plus!

Clovehitch (2013)

Clovehitch is more of a horror drama than a thriller, this is not your typical serial killer whodunnit. It is a very thoughtful and well written film with a lot of tension and great acting. Our main stars are Dylan McDermott and Charlie Plummer who play father and son (Don & Tyler) and Madisen Beaty who plays the friend. (Kassi) They do an incredible job with their roles and feel realistic and relatable. The movie gets going pretty quickly and we love that fast paced start but overall it is a slower burn that is well worth it. There are some pretty graphic images shown throughout and it is just the right level of disturbing. We really love the way the tone shifts about halfway through the movie and that is when it really picks up and feels more like an intense look into the mind of a serial killer. It is a decently long movie (110 minutes) but it never feels slow or boring. We don’t love the ending but we don’t hate it either and it wraps up the film pretty neatly. Worth a watch if you want something thought provoking and graphic but not too overwhelmingly violent.

Oculus

Oculus is one of our all time favorite movies! We adore Mike Flanagan and this film is fantastic in so many ways. The score of the film is incredible and fits each scene perfectly and really makes the movie flow. The idea of a beautiful, horrific and haunted mirror is intriguing. The writing is super solid and it weaves seamlessly between the past and present to tell the story of a brother and a sister who encounter the mirror as children, survive and vow to return to kill it". There are a lot of really cool shots (in true Flanagan fashion) and overall the vibe of the movie stays creepy and unsettling throughout. Rory Cochrine does a great job playing the father, gradually changing his behavior while being seduced by the mirror and Katee Sackhoff does an incredible job as well. All the acting from the main cast feels very genuine and the casting for the younger versions is nearly perfect. The end gets pretty supernatural to say the least but if you’re into that give it a watch!

The Shining (1980)

The Shining is obviously a masterpiece and horror classic in general. We all know in this one we get to watch Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) slowly slip into insanity and terrorize his wife and cilld (Shelly Duvall and Danny Lloyd) in the famous Overlook Hotel. This is a ”Hell yeah” on the worth watching list any day but especially during father’s day week! The score, the writing and the acting are all top notch and it is just a blast from beginning to end.

Come to Daddy

Come to Daddy is such a fun and wild ride, the tone changes throughout the movie and it just gets more and more twisted. Best to go into this BLIND, do not watch the trailer. Elisha Wood is so funny and endearing in this movie (at the end) you really see his character develop and change throughout the film. I starts with him going to visit his estranged father at his secluded home in the woods. They don’t exactly hit it off and tension builds as they have increasingly odd and aggressive conversations. This movie is extremely creative, intriguing and funny. It gets really gory and violent towards the end which is so much fun to watch. This movie also has an awesome soundtrack! If you like weird horror/genre movies you’ll love this one!
