Movie Nights: Week in review 7.26-8.1

This week we watched some old favorites and tried one new one.

It Follows

We love It follows, the story is so original and interesting. It has some really creepy shots and a great ominous score throughout. The idea of a sexually transmitted killer sounds almost silly but it feels very genuinely eerie, they do a fantastic job. It feels like a thriller mystery and it keeps you on your toes. We love Maika Monroe in anything, she does an incredible job, Keir Gilchrist also did great. It has such an intense ending and it totally worth a watch if you appreciate indie horror movies

White Oleander

White Oleander isn’t exactly horror… BUT it does have some really dark themes and violence throughout. This one is very special to Marissa because she loves the book so much. The book is much more detailed, intense, and very beautifully written, it is worth a read if you’re into that! This dark drama follows the life of an adolescent girl named Astrid (Alison Lohman) and her journey through the foster care system after her Mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) is sent to prison. She meets a myriad of very unique characters that help her learn who she is and what she wants. Perfect if you’re in the mood for a more serious coming of age story.

The Craft

This one is a classic and has some of our favorite actors from the 90s mainly, Fairuza Balk but weirdly this the second movie released in 1996 with Skeet Urich and Neve Campbell both in it. Although we’re not super familiar with a ton of Rachel True’s other work it was cool there was a member of the main four girls who was brown for some representation in an otherwise all white casted film. This is essentially a movie about teen witches who take their powers too far when getting revenge on their enemies. It is a really fun teen screams vibe but with witches! For being teenagers it actually gets pretty graphic and it feels very gritty. One scene involved using over 3,000 snakes, including pythons, boas, water snakes, garter snakes, rat snakes, and more. This one has big Halloween vibes and we may have to rewatch in October. Always worth a watch!

Identity

This one is another one that is so nostalgic for us and so much fun. The cast is full of familiar faces with John Cusack, Ray Liotta, John C. McGinley, Amanda Peet and Clea DuVall. The plot is so fun and it is shot in an interesting way, showing things from the different characters perspectives. It is a great thriller to watch in the rain because it is pouring the whole movie. ^ strangers find themselves stranded at a hotel due to flooding when people start being killed. It is really fast paced with interesting characters it is definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for some rainy day horror.

Dark Windows

This one was better than we expected but we didn’t expect much. Starring Rory Alexander, Vanessa Borgli and Anna Bullard who were unfamiliar to us but they all did a decent job acting wise. The script made sense and we actually liked the killer but for the most part of the movie it felt like a teen drama aftermath of a tragedy. It wasn’t really exciting or horror like at all til towards the end. The man “terrorizing them” had a pretty cool mask and he was pretty fun. There was a unique way of killing somebody that we hade’t seen before which is very rare. It had some good parts but was a little slow getting there. A fine slow burn for a low budget horror movie. We liked the ending a lot more than the rest of the movie and more than we thought we would.
