Movie Nights: Week in review 7.19-7.25

This week we watched some fun thrillers!

Stopmotion (2023)

We really enjoyed Stopmotion. It is very unique and different, with a very raw and emotional tone. It follows a woman (Ella Blake) who works with her mother, a legendary stop motion animator (also very unpleasant and seemingly mentally abusive). It has some really creepy body horror parts that made us cringe and the overall vibe is unsettling. There are some really cool stop motion scenes and we loved the creativity of the script. It really reminded us of “meatmation” from Bobs Burgers and it made us like it more. It’s a little bit of a slower burn but worth it if you don’t mind that and a more melancholy story.

Shudder Island (2010)

This one's a mystery thriller starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo. In 1954, U.S. marshal Teddy Daniels (Leo) is assigned to investigate the disappearance of a patient from Boston's Shutter Island Ashecliffe Hospital. As the story goes on you learn he wanted to come to this island for personal reasons related to a tragic event in his past. With appearances from Ben Kingsley, Jackie Earle Haley and John Carroll Lynch there are a ton of familiar faces. The movie is pretty fast paced and holds your attention, it  has some twists and turns that keep you on your toes. Good if you’re in the mood for a psychological thriller.

The Invisible Man (2020)

This movie is so incredible. We love it from start to finish. It captivates you from the start, it is impossible to look away and you shouldn’t. The fear and paranoia are so palpable and intensified by the way it is shot, it has you on the edge of your seat the whole time. You are constantly wondering if you’re seeing something move in the background. The effects are INCREDIBLE, beyond amazing. All the fighting scenes with the invisible man are so impressive and believable. This movie is like a hollow man on crack. We absolutely love Elizabeth Moss, she is incredible in this role and takes this film to a new level. She is relatable and we love her at the end and the ending in general. This movie was an instant classic in our eyes. Fantastic if you are in the mood for a psychological thriller with great effects and a captivating story.

Drag me to hell (2009)

We did not like this one…we were disappointed because it is directed by Sam Raimi but we did not have a good time. We really thought we would like more than we did. Starring Alison Lohman and Justin Long, it was described as campy but it just felt silly and dumb, the effects looked really bad. It vibed like a Scooby Doo movie but it was taking itself too seriously. It relies heavily on jump scares and loud noises but nothing actually creepy. We didn’t like the humor at all, it was not our cup of tea. Our favorite part of the movie was Justin Long. I guess this would be a fine choice if you don’t mind silly humor, jump scares and bad special effects.

The Boy (2016)

The Boy is a very creepy psychological thriller that follows a woman named Greta (Lauren Cohan) who is hired to be a nanny for a young boy in the English Countryside. When she arrives she realizes something strange about the boy, it is a doll. The parents treat it as a real child and expect her to do the same. She is left with a list of rules to follow for his care. She is pretty disrespectful to the family and the doll and doesn’t follow their care instructions despite taking the job and being paid. Strange things start to happen around the house and she begins to suspect there is something strange about this doll. There are some really creepy shots and scenes throughout as the doll terrorizes her. We can’t help but feel she deserves what's coming to her because she so blatantly disregarded everything she was told and is taking advantage of the situation. This one is a fun one especially if you like doll horror. We loved the ending.
