Movie Nights: Week in review 8.9-8.15

This week we watched all new ones! It was a wild ride with some real gems and some let downs.

Abigail (2024)

Abigail was amazing. We absolutely loved the blood splatter and gore throughout. The group was fun to watch, the characters were interesting and it was a decent cast. (Melissa Barrera, Kevin Durand & Angus Cloud being familiar faces) The little girl “Abigail” was really clever and entertaining, Alisha Weir did a fantastic job. This one was just a bloody riot from start to end. We can’t stress enough how well done the explosions and gore was, I mean its exactly what you want in a bloody vampire movie like this. If you liked Ready or Not, you’ll definitely wanna give this one a watch.

What Keeps You Alive (2018)

We were so pleasantly pleased by this one, we didn’t expect much of anything because we had never heard of it and didn’t really know the actors. (Hannah Emily Anderson & Brittany Allen) It seemed pretty well written, captivating and original enough. There is a shocking moment that had us hooked early. It is always nice to see some LGBTQ+ representation and in this one it offers a slightly different perspective. It’s a paced thriller with some brutal attacks throughout. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a decent mystery/thriller.

The Den (2013)

This was another one we were really surprised by! It was so much better than we ever expected. We loved it more and more as it went on and on top of that we loved the ending! One of the best webcam horror movies we have seen. The acting is fine but it feels pretty real. The main character Elizabeth (Melanie Papalia) does some pretty stupid things but who doesn’t in a horror movie, nothing too unforgivable. It feels like a really dark and more violent Searching (2018) with a lot more murder. Would recommend to any horror fans especially if you enjoy the webcam style.

Deer Camp ‘86 (2024)

This one might have had some potential, we love some woods horror but it fell very short. It started fine enough with a group of men going hunting, they exchange some very ridiculous dialogue, it was stiff and felt forced. The acting definitely leaves quite a bit to be desired. The plot is sloppy and the ending got way more supernatural than we were expecting and looked a little foolish, it was a little fun in the middle but not worth the time. There were not really any good kills, the movie felt boring and silly at the same time.

Saw X (2023)

We didn’t like this one. I guess this is supposed to take place directly after the 1st Saw movie, which seems odd because it is so much later (almost 20 years apart) so the woman (Shawnee Smith) just looks so much older it’s silly. We really are not fans of Jigsaw as a villian an this just felt like a lot of stretching of anything reasonable and left a lot of questions. The storyline is a little sappy and we didn’t like it. It tries to paint Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) as this good guy and its really weird and doesn’t work for us. There isn’t enough violence and the gore just doesnt make up for how boring and unrealistic the rest of the movie is. Not even worth the time in our opinion.
