Movie Nights:Week in review 12.29-1.4

At AlethalWeaponArt movies (particularly horror) are a huge part of our life and our business so follow along and see what we watched each week! We will tell you if it's worth watching or if you should skip it altogether and why. Be warned- we are NOT movie snobs and we just love to have a good time. We hope to provide inspiration for your next movie night!

This week was full of fantastic movies old and new. Every single one was worth watching!

Talk to me: This movie is a MUST watch! This was by far our favorite movie of 2023 and was added to our all time list of favorites. Talk to Me embodies everything we love about modern horror. From the killer introduction scene (one of our favorites ever!), the soundtrack/score which work together to set a tense and dark tone throughout, and the genuinely terrifying storyline this film has very few flaws. It's best to go into this one without watching the trailer first if you can because several scenes are shocking and the plot deserves to be unraveled as it's meant to be seen. Throughout the movie you will notice the strong ties to addiction with the euphoric feelings they get from something so obviously damaging, the peer pressure from the group, and even as obvious as using a belt to tie them down while connected to the hand. Mia's addiction to the hand ruins the lives of those around her and takes over her life. Shot perfectly in our opinion, this movie flows so well you can't help but get sucked in. Few films make us cringe but this one earns it with a few brutal scenes which add to the reason that this is the best horror film of the last year- or the last 10. Don't miss it!

Evil Dead (2013): One of the best remakes of all time! Evil Dead (2013) puts a great spin on a classic and revamps it in a modern way. The premise is believable and perfectly explains why they are out in this hellish cabin. The drug addicted sister of our "Ash" was taken to this cabin to detox, explaining why they won't leave when things first get weird. The friend group finds a very disturbing scene in the basement and one of them decides to read the necronomicon aloud (which couldn't be more obviously dangerous) which awakens evil- duh. The attacks in this movie are brutal and the special effects are great. The well done plot and violent kills make this one such a great remake. Check it out if you enjoy a good gory demon movie.

Knock at the Cabin:
Knock at the cabin is an intense film where a young girl and her fathers are staying in a remote cabin when 4 armed strangers force themselves into the home. The opening scene is so creepy we were immediately hooked. Dave Bautista does such a phenomenal job in this role because he is so physically intimidating and yet somehow so gentle! We were completely captivated throughout and couldn't stop talking about it well after. This movie brings interesting questions to mind, showcases all aspects of humanity, and really makes you think. If you are looking for a movie to intrigue you, check this one out and then watch again! This was our second viewing and it was a completely different experience. We are avoiding spoilers on this one- go watch it!

When Evil Lurks: This is a foreign film that is sure to creep you out. Body horror is an understatement, this film's special effects will have you looking at people in a whole new light. In this movie an evil that passes to people and animals is released when you shoot one with a gun. This fast paced tale is a wild ride full of violence and shocking shots that leave you with your mouth open. The main character is frustrating and seems to make all the wrong choices but seems like a genuine character. Creepy vibes throughout and a fast paced plot definitely make this one worth watching.

Leave the world behind: This one reminded us of Knock at the Cabin in the fact that the horror is less graphic and gore and more situational. This unsettling film starts with the strangest things happening like a ship grounding on the beach and planes falling from the sky. The visuals are done so realistically it gave us chills! You are suspicious of all characters in the film and this adds a layer of anxiety to the movie. The acting is fantastic and the whole thing does a great job of building up tension. This movie will make you think and we were anxious throughout. Worth a watch!

Terror Train: Classic! This new years film is so much fun! It has our favorite scream queen Jaimie Lee and a killer premise, plus we really don't have enough New Years horror so this one is always going to be on our list after the holidays. A group of rotten college students have a costume party on a party train to celebrate the new year which gives Halloween vibes (it's always more fun to watch people getting killed in costumes!). They are trapped with a kid they once terrorized and are picked off one by one. Good kills, teen screams and fun  make this one worth watching!

Our favorite of the week was definitely Talk to me this one also had the kill of the week being the opening scene.
