Movie Nights: Week in review 8.23-8.29

This week we watched all new ones!

The Gate (1987)

This one is fun. there is some really vibey music and this movie feels very fall it is a great one and has super 80s vibes. The intro feels like a weird fever dream. The movie gets pretty wild. It starts with some Canadian parents leaving their son and daughter behind for a weekend trip when they accidentally release some tiny demons from the underworld after opening a portal in the backyard. It has some really cool effects that are done really well. The little demons that get released are really cute and hideous at the same time. It is a really entertaining and fun one to watch it kinda has goosebumps vibes.

Don’t Hang Up (2016)

This one has really really annoying characters, I mean truly almost unbearable but if you can get past that it is pretty fun. It is about two teenage friends who make a habit of placing a lot of very inappropriate “Prank calls”. They really push the boundaries and cross the lines of what is too far. Also the fact that you hate the characters makes it even more fun to watch them get terrorized. They get a taste of their own medicine when a man named Mr.Lee won’t stop calling them and it escalates from there into a deadly game. For the most part it is a fairly predictable movie but still enjoyable and a good amount of gore and violence. We liked the voice of the killer and how he talks. We ended up really really liking the ending it was fast paced, fun and bloody!

Good Boy (2020)

We watched this partially just because of Judy Greer, we love her from Arrested Development and Cursed. This is a Hulu “Into the dark” so we adjusted our expectations because those can be so hit or miss. It wasn’t listed as a horror comedy, but we could tell from the description it would be. It is a very light hearted film about a woman who wants to have a child but cannot find anybody who wants that with her so she decides to get an emotional support animal instead. The dog she gets is a great pet at first but starts to kill people in her life when they upset her and as you can imagine this would cause problems. This one is a bit too silly for us and the writing was just so so. The plot got pretty wild at the end and felt nonsensical. Not really worth the time if you’re looking for a horror comedy there are definitely better options out there.

The Seeding (2023)

This one starts off in a pretty weird and gets going right off the bat which we appreciate. The scenery is really gorgeous. It follows a man who gets lost after following a child in the dessert and ends up getting trapped and held captive by a band of really odd and unsettling people. He makes a lot of mistakes to get where he ends up so it is hard to feel bad for him. Why are you chasing random kids in the dessert? Why are you climbing down into a crater on a rickety latter when you’re already lost? The list of things he does wrong goes on and on, many mistakes were made. He ends up finding a woman in a house who is also trapped. The group that is keeping them torment them but keep them alive by sending food and supplies down. There is a cool and brutal string up kill scene that we really enjoyed! This movie was way more fun than we thought and had a really fun ending. Definitely worth a watch if you’re in the mood for a unique thriller.

The Tank (2023)

We were impressed with this one! It ended up being the favorite of the week because we enjoyed it so much from start to finish. The acting is decent enough and there is a creepy little backstory we thought was fun. This is another one with a gorgeous setting which is always pretty to watch. The acting is decent enough especially considering it’s names we didn’t know. (Luciane Buchanan and Matt Whelan) There is a good ammount of gore and it looks and feels pretty real. There is really good build up to seeing these cool creatures. They look really realistic like a mix between a human and a big lizard its pretty awesome and we love the sounds they make! A creepy and unique creature feature if you’re in that mood.
