Movie Nights: Week in review 9.06-9.12

This week we got to see a lot of new movies we had been wanting to watch and it was a blast!

Trap (2024)

Trap was so much fun, it was a close contender for our favorite of the week. We absolutely love Josh Hartnett and it was amazing to see him on screen again! He did an incredible job, somehow we found ourselves rooting for him. It really felt like a concert, this is because it basically was. Saleka Shyamalan was actually performing the songs for a live audience of extras who were not told what the movie was about but given the album beforehand so they could sing along. This aspect really adds and sucks you into their world while you’re watching. We didn’t love the ending parts or flashbacks with his mom, it felt a little forced and unnecessary. It is great if you want to watch a tense but fun thriller.

Oddity (2024)

It stars Carolyn Bracken and Johnny French who we didn’t really recognize from anything. There is a really creepy and cool wooden man sculpture that really added to the dark vibe of the movie. The characters kinda felt flat and not that relatable. We really enjoyed the setting and uncomfortable vibes of the movie and we actually liked the ending quite a bit. Nothing extraordinary but the best parts involve the beautiful creepy sculpture. Worth a watch if you’re looking for something entertaining and creepy.

MaXXXine (2024)

MaXXXine was a fun ride for sure with some really good moments but we did not like the ending at all. Mia Goth does an incredible job as always and we love her but we did not love this movie. We also really liked Kevin Bacon’s character and he plays it perfectly. There were some cool scenes but overall the storyline felt a little silly especially towards the end. Worth a watch if you like Pearl or X because it is cool to see her after that but we felt MaXXXine was a little overhyped and that took away from our experience.

Twisters (2024)

Twisters definitely exceeded our expectations. It was so much fun and we think it is much better than the first one. The “love story" aspect was pretty low key and non distracting which we loved. The effects were fantastic and the intensity of the tornados was really cool. We really liked the main character, she was very smart and passionate and Daisy Edgar-Jones  was great. We kind of hate Glen Powell but he was perfect for this role, he played his character pretty flawlessly. We liked the aspect of him basically being some kind of weather influencer and the nickname “Tornado Hunter” made us laugh. It felt like there were a LOT of nods to the original and we loved that because the movie is pretty nostalgic for us. The effects were incredible, done so well that it really makes you anxious while you’re watching it! A fantastic and really tense thriller.

Longlegs (2024)

We were hyped for this one, and it was satisfying to finally catch it. It might have been a little over hyped for us but it was really good. We LOVED Nicolas Cage in it, he did an incredible job and was so incredibly creepy. His performance is genuinely pretty terrifying and we really enjoyed it. We didn’t really love the main character played by Maika Monroe but she did a great job. We also really loved the score throughout, it really added to the unsettling vibe. The ending got a little wild for us and we didn’t love it but it was incredibly tense and entertaining, definitely worth watching if you like horror. (But also why would you be reading this if you don’t)

The House That Jack Built (2018)

We have been wanting to see this one for a while and never got around to it but it was worth the wait! It stars Matt Dillon who does an incredible job, really capturing the character and making it feel real. We really enjoyed it throughout, it was very artistic and we were not expecting that. It also actually made us laugh quite a bit. If you have a morbid sense of humor this one will really get to you. The kill scenes are very entertaining and pretty graphic. We loved the storyline and even liked the ending. It is a bit long so strap in when you watch it but it is definitely worth it.
